Dear Reader,

We are very happy to announce that as of January 2020 the Smart Anything Everywhere Initiative has entered into Phase 3. Numerous news and developments have transpired during the initial stages of this new phase. Six additional Innovation Actions are now aligned to the SAE initiative offering their expertise and support in Cyber-Physical Systems, Customised Low Energy Computing as well as Flexible and Wearable Electronics.

The Smart Anything Everywhere Initiative is now supported by the Smart4Europe2 Coordination and Support Action as a follow up of Smart4Europe and coordinated by Dr. Meike Reimann from Steinbeis 2i GmbH. The current Covid-19 situation has also been a major factor in the operation of SAE. In this context, Smart4Europe2 and the Innovation Actions aligned with SAE are taking coordinated actions to face this crisis and support SMEs and the general population in overcoming the current scenario.

We kindly invite you to enjoy our latest issue and further learn about the latest SAE developments, the different Innovation Actions, their scope, open calls and possible ways to engage with them. We also invite you to visit our website with regularly updated information www.smartanythingeverywhere.eu.

Best Regards,

Smart4Europe2 Cluster Collaboration Kick-Off Workshop

SAE is now coordinated by the Smart4Europe2 Action, which operates between January 2020 and December 2021. Smart4Europe2 is co-financed by the European Commission, DT-ICT-01-2019 Smart Anything Everywhere Initiative and it is constituted by seven Partners from five European countries. All partners are deeply rooted not only within the SAE Initiative and their own eco-system, but also in the five different areas the Initiative is addressing.

The SAE Cluster Kick-Off Meeting and Workshop took place on April 2nd, 2020 and was set to bring the running and freshly funded Innovation Actions together. More than 40 representatives of all Innovation Actions shared their experiences on lessons learnt and presented aims and future open calls to the other participants. Moreover, European Commission representatives gave an overview on the current and future funding programmes as well as their expectations towards the projects. Representatives of I4MS as well as DIHNET presented the sister projects, followed by a discussion of possible ways of interaction, collaboration and networking to enable cross-fertilisation among the individual projects. The workshop was closed with a presentation on Open Call alignment as well as lively discussion about the impacts of the current pandemic situation.

All presentations and the recording of the meeting as well as further information on future funding programmes from the European Commission can be found on our website. Please click HERE.

COVID-19: Impacts on SAE and Innovation Actions

The Innovation Actions aligned with SAE have proactively adapted to the current scenario to support SMEs in the development of new products and innovations to overcome this crisis. DIH4CPS and SMART4ALL have redirected their calls to foster innovations that face the COVID-19 crisis from their respective areas of expertise. Other Innovation Actions have modified the evaluation procedure of their open calls to consider applications that directly tackle issues related to the COVID-19 propagation. Regarding Smart4Europe2, a permanent coordination with the European Commission has been established to articulate positive palliative measures in the current scenario as well as to support Innovation Actions initiatives.

WHAT’S NEW?
Innovation Actions of Phase III

Six new Innovation Actions started operations on January 1st, 2020 and will be running for at least 36 months. These Innovation Actions are funded within the Horizon2020 financial framework with total budget of 63 Million Euro and address the areas of Cyber-Physical and Embedded Systems (CPS), Customised Low-Energy Computing powering CPS (CLEC) and the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as Organic and Large Area Electronics (OLAE) and Flexible, Wearable Electronics (FWE). Furthermore, an additional Innovation Action is engaged in Widening the Digital Innovation Hub (DIH) network fostering collaboration between new DIHs in under-represented regions with well-established, highly experienced and mature DIHs. We are happy to give a first introduction to these new Innovation Actions and are looking forward to support them with our strong SAE network!

BOWI: Boosting Widening Digital Innovation Hubs

BOWI aims to boost innovation uptake across Europe through widening the area of action of DIHs and transfer of knowledge between different regions and innovation hubs. The project supports and fosters collaboration between DIHs across Europe to increase their capacity to support SMEs with digital technologies and thus strengthen regional economy and the competitiveness of European SMEs. This will be done by direct funding through Technology Transfer Experiments (TTEs) where mature and developing DIHs collaborate jointly in solving concrete digitalisation problems of companies from emerging regions. A first Open Call is planned for 08. June to 15. September, 2020 with a total funding of 1.44 Million Euro (60K per experiment).

Please CLICK HERE to visit the SAE website for a more detailed overview about BOWI.
More information on the Open Calls will soon be posted on BOWI’s upcoming website.

DigiFED: Digital Innovation Hubs federation for large scale adoption of digital technologies by European SMEs

DigiFed’s main objective is to encourage the adoption of advanced digital technologies by EU SMEs specially by non-digital businesses. DigiFed’s area of focus is CPS with particular emphasis in security and privacy, autonomy, and human-machine interaction. For this, it provides support mechanisms across different innovation pathways for individual SMEs as well as SME-consortia to foster the introduction of digital technologies in their product and service offerings. DigiFed first Open Call runs until 09. June, 2020, awarding up to €55k in funding.

DIH4CPS: Fostering DIHs for Embedding Interoperability in Cyber-Physical Systems of European SMEs

DIH4CPS helps European enterprises overcoming innovation hurdles in CPS interoperability and aims to establish Europe as a world leading innovator of the Fourth Industrial Revolution by creating an embracing an interdisciplinary network of DIHs and solution providers. DIH4CPS focus area is CPS, specifically interweaving knowledge and technologies from different domains, and connecting regional clusters with the pan-European expert pool of DIHs. Its first call will open in April 2020 and lasts for five months and targets mini consortia. Each consortium can receive up to €180.000 with a cap of €100.000 by each individual party.

HUBCAP: Digital Innovation Hubs and Collaborative Platform For Cyber-Physical Systems

HUBCAP provides a one-stop-shop for European SMEs wanting to join the CPS revolution by creating a growing and sustainable pan-European network that offers opportunities to undertake experiments, seek investment, and access expertise and training. This is achieved through a cloud-based open collaboration platform that enables potential users to access advanced model-based design technologies and test new CPS design technology before investment. HUBCAP aims to engage early-adopters with 3 different open calls during the projects lifetime. Its first Pull Call will open in April 2020.

SMART4ALL: Self-Sustained Cross Border Customized Cyber-Physical System Experiments for Capacity Building among European Stakeholders

SMART4ALL focuses on the area of CLEC CPS and the IoT and aims to reveal “hidden innovation treasures” from Southern-East Europe (SEE), helping them to find the path to market via new, innovative commercial products. SMART4ALL combines a set of unique characteristics from different cultures, policies, geographical areas and application domains under a common vision and develops and maintains an active network of DIHs across SEE for supporting academics, start-ups, SMEs, and mid-caps entering the digitization era. The objective of SMART4ALL will be achieved through the design and implementation of numerous cross-border Pathfinder Application Experiments and Knowledge Transfer Experiments that will be executed by the consortium members and by 3rd party consortia (academics, companies and mid-caps).
The first Open Call of this type will open on 15. April, 2020.
