PAST EVENTS
Digital Innovation Hubs Day, May 14th 2019, Stuttgart, Germany
Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) are one of the key elements of the Digitising European Industry Strategy (DEI) strategy of the European Commission with the aim to support companies – notably SMEs, start-ups and mid-caps – to become more competitive through the adoption of latest digital technologies.
The Digital Innovation Hubs Day brought together European digitisation initiatives and Digital Innovation Hubs (DIH) with the ones situated in Baden-Wuerttemberg (south-western Germany) and its neighbouring countries Austria, Switzerland and France. Honoured to have Max Lemke, Head of Unit for “Technologies and Systems for Digitising Industry” from the European Commission as keynote speaker participants shared their concepts of the DIHs and initiatives, experiences and explored possible collaborations. Interactive discussion sessions were addressing questions such as:
- How to support many small projects
- Cascade Funding – an instrument fitting the needs of SMEs
- Experiences and lessons learnt (by DIHs and SMEs)
- Re-use of technological building blocks in new projects
- How to create a leverage effect of public funding
- Collaboration of initiatives and hubs on regional, national and EU levels

Future Approaches and Recommendations to Enhance Digital Transformation of SMEs
On the 25th June Smart4Europe organised an EC consultation meeting on “Future Approaches and Recommendations to Enhance Digital Transformation of SMEs” in Brussels. At the meeting the draft recommendations of the Smart4Europe CSA were outlined concerning linking DIHs at an international level with PPPs and other initiatives, the need for synchronised funding, targeted actions towards white spot countries, a Technology Radar for SMEs, the need to address new application domains, a Research and Innovation Radar targeting Horizon Europe, the need to support skills and education and finally the promotion of standardisation to SMEs.
The event was supported by a presentation by Sandro d’Elia, Programme Officer at the European Commission, on Horizon Europe and Digital Europe as well as presentations from key DIH initiatives. The event was also characterised by active discussions and breakout sessions to brainstorm ideas for the way forward as we move into the next Framework Programme.
